Let’s touch base

What do these words mean to you? Here at Group that’s what we call our weekly meetings with our direct supervisors. It’s a casual time to get together and review our priorities, ask questions, get feedback, and offer praise or coaching on how we are doing or what we could do better. It’s not scary…or intimidating…or stressful. I actually look forward to it, and I don’t think I’m the only one who does!

When it comes to working with people, keeping the communication channels open is so important. Whether you are thinking of those in paid or volunteer positions, it honors them when you make time for them to share their thoughts, get positive feedback (and coaching when appropriate), and give you input as a leader.  It doesn’t have to be scary, or formal, or even time consuming.

You could boil it down to two questions: What current challenges are you experiencing and how can I help you? and As your leader, what would you like me to keep doing, stop doing, or start doing?

These questions are a great starting point for conversation and will let your people know that their thoughts, opinions, and ideas are important to you.

How could you implement “touch base” with your team? Could you meet once a week..once a month? Perhaps you could start the trend and encourage your leaders to hold touch bases with their teams? Share your thoughts on our blog…
